I was looking forward to today. Yeah I was coming in on a Sunday to feed everyone that was having the day off and watching football. Da Bears are on Monday anyway and I get to help with a special cake. Happy happy joy joy!! We have a new Brigade commander coming in and of course we wanna get in good with him. Hey who doesn’t wanna be on the bosses good side. 
So I along with my buddy Gorden who is a C2C member but I don’t know if he has posted yet, were requested to lead a hand. We made up the buttercream while our NCOIC (Sgt in Charge) made up the cake.
It’s a simple two white cake with a cherry filling. I assisted with the inital frosting and then went out to the line to cover Gordan while he helped with the detail work. Yes we did this while preping and serving the dinner meal. Mintutes after I was tucking nice square corners on the cake, I was flipping burgers and grilling off grilled cheeses so my bud could get some time in to. Thats how we roll. Take care of each other. cause in the end that’s all you got.

Nice cake…very BIG! Cherry filling? Yummmm! I really admire you guys and the work you do. I hope the “boys and girls” appreciate all you do to make life on the base a little more like home.
I remember what it was like back when I was one of the “boys” back in the 80s, my first time in MOM so I try hard to take care for these kids. I remember how hard it can be on the younger crowd away from home on the holidays
We actually had kids come in tonite and sing carols to our diners. That was really nice.
Now your gonna make me cry! Think of the guys overseas! Please say they do EVERYTHING they can to make it “homey”! Is there anything we can do here?
Yeah we did MOM I just got back from there. Me and Gorden did a 300lb gingerbread house for Xmas and holiday cakes for Easter as well. I’m headed to Afganinstan next Dec so I’ll let you know what we need to keep them happy.
Nice work! My grandfather was with the 101st on D-Day at Normandy. Keep up the excellent work. I remember reading your blogs and posts from Iraq not too long ago. Another year and its off to another combat tour? What about “routine” training cycles and tdy jaunts to Germany and Korea and such? I had a friend with the 82nd (he was laid to rest last fall) and within 6 weeks of his first tour of Iraq they were on “alert” for a trip to South Korea. They didn’t go but “routine” stuff started right up again. Is that common at Ft. Campbell as well?
Please do…I teach and this would be a GREAT social studies project. I did a care package project for Desert Storm and still have kids (now in college) who mention the experience when they see me. It had a great impact. I grew up outside Camp Legeune during the VN WAR. My heart goes out to you guys every day!
Beautiful cake Mike - I love your multi-tasking and teamwork. Its the sort of stuff I love the military for. My dad was career (30 years) and although I had to share him with the Army growing up I don’t resent it a bit. Kinda makes me proud, actually. And knowing active duty guys like you now makes me a little proud also.
Mom Thanks first of all! I was a pen pal to a 4th grade class last time so I’m more than happy to help the kids understand from a GI’s point of view.
Tom, I look back on other jobs I’ve had as a cook and can’t say I’ve worked any that have me on my toes more. If you aren’t cooking your products or cleaning you’re helping someone else or teaching the new kids how to do it right. While my kids aren’t “trained” I know that many could hold their own in any kitchen with the right guidance with any culinary school grad. I’d like to see how some holier than though culinary school grads would hold up to what we do. There are three of us that have some school training the rest are from the school of hard knocks.
