Is There a Substitute for Fennel Seed? Save to MyRecipes

Postby Mare749 on Sun Dec 17, 2006 6:06 pm

I've never used it, so I don't have any on hand. Is there something I could use in pear chutney? Thanks.

Well the only real subs for fennel seed are anise seed and licorice root and don't suppose you have either of them lying around. I've made all kinds of chutney including pear and don't really think it'll suffer if you leave the fennel seed out.

Like mark1 said...your chutney probably won't suffer for the lack.

But if you have any Sambuca, Pernod, Absinthe or Anisette liquor around that can help- just a tiny splash though, it's strong. If you really want the flavour in there that is.

No, I'm afraid I don't have any of those things, but thanks for the information. I always wondered what fennel seed was like. Think I'll just leave it out this time.

good thinking, I forgot about anise flavored liqueurs, and include ouzo or arak as possibilities.

Can't believe I never made chutney before! This is incredibly tasty. I can only imagine how the fennel seed might enhance it even more, but it's good this way.

Unless you're a vegetarian or have a particular aversion to pork products you would have eaten fennel seed numerous times in Italian sausages. Fennel seed is what gives Italian sausages their distinctive flavor. I like to saute up onions and peppers with a little fennel seed, it is simple and a nice combination.
