Moving Save to MyRecipes

Postby Confit on Mon Jan 08, 2007 2:49 pm

Not sure if this is the right spot or not. I will be in the next few months a graduate of a two year culinary arts program. I am looking at moving to Reno Nevada ( i live in canada) in august or september of this year. I am just sort of testing the waters here but can any one offer some advice, jobs etc that i can look into from here?

Have you created a profile on our Jobs board? Put up a resume and then take a look at the listings.

You will need to check with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to see what is required for you to obtain a permit to live and work in the States as well. The office in Halifax should have all of the information that you need.

Best of luck to you and congratulations on your upcoming graduation! What an exciting time in your life!

Yes moving to the states isnt as easy as "i want to move" when your Canadian.

I looked into it and unless you have parents who are american or a spouse that is american you will need to get sponsorship from a company.

You can however go on a 6-12 month exchange through www.swap.ca but that depends on your age!

what i was thinking about today is going down there for a visit. Doing the resume/job hunting dance. Getting something hooked up down there, coming home, getting the visa approved and going back again. A little more costly, but possibly easier to do?

Definitely easier to do, but still not easy. But if it is meant to be--it will work out for you and if Reno is really where you want to be go for it!!! The tricky part is how many other qualified chefs currently reside in the area. I don't think they can legally give work to a Canadian if it is going to rob a qualified American of a job.

I worked in Michigan for a year--I had to be sponsored by the school that I was going to be teaching at and the principal had to write a letter to Immigration and Citizenship claiming that there were no suitable applicants in his area and therefore he wanted to hire me. I was granted a temporary work permit that had to be reviewed and approved again each year.

I only stayed in Michigan a year and believe it or not had more trouble getting BACK INTO Canada. Born and raised here and my own country didn't want me back--ha! ha!

Oh and my taxes were an absolute nightmare!!!

But again--if this is really what you want to do--I say go for it. There has to be a way!

Good luck and keep us posted!
