Royal Pain Save to MyRecipes

Postby chefa1a on Tue Jan 09, 2007 6:33 am

Just started a new Job in Whistler Resort < BC

was a crazy week up here Xmas to New Years

grand opening before christmas and all the tourists

then we get the call one day

the Prince of Saudi Arabia wants to rent out the room for a lunch apres ski party

sounds great right

they are supposed to meet us at 11:30 am to look at the room and set up a menu

dont show till 3 we nail down the menu by 3:30 they want to eat at 4:30

he owns 40% of the four seasons up here and mistook us for having 20-30 guys in the kitchen to accomodate his every need

weird no carb diet, no carbs from wine , fruit or juice in the food. they say super plain no seasoning for the prince but do your thing for the other guests and entourage

pulled it off, meanwhile with the event co-ordinater clapping hands every time when they wanted additional items or courses

then they say all of a sudden pack up dessert to go we're going back to the four seasons, that was fun

great for the resume pain in the......

Was this an episode of "Cooking For The Starz"??? Sounds like you pulled it off pretty neat, Chris. Welcome to "Truth IS stranger than fiction."

So what did you send out to the Little Prince?

I had an old Sous Chef who contemplated going to Saudi to cook for a Prince and his family $50K tax free, but 24hour beckon call. 3.00am and little princy wants food for 40 of his buddies, guess what your getting up!!ahhh

Good to hear you pulled this off though, very commendable.

Aren't there about 2 thousand princes in the Arab emerates? Anyone remotely related to the royal family is a prince. So very possibly, if this one liked what you did - you'll soon see a parade of royalty. Yippee!

Five star hotel. Up pulls this Mercedes limo. The doormen open the doors and are frantically gestured "up front". There are two live goats. The prince wants them prepared. Frantic gestures from all. Back to the loading dock goes the goats minus the prince. We all stare, laugh and make wild jokes. What, when and how? With wide smiles and flurry of robes arrive the prince's entourage. They take charge of killing, bleeding and I think blessing or some prayer for either the poor goats or us. We scrutinize the rotating oven in the bakery and are told over our lead bakers dead body or ours. Our Ilicano line chefs come to the rescue with a quick fire pit on the golf course. It only cost a diner for the lead gardener and his wife. Just another day in the life of a F&B Director.

Well I've read this thread, have encountered those so-called 'royals' and am finding it extremely difficult to comment without it sounding "biased"...
Uh...so I won't!

Mikyart: Sorry you didn't get it, as apparently everybody else did and it's perfectly obvious what I meant and certainly germaine to your initial post.
Also from a point of netiquette, this is not "your" thread, it's a public thread open to comments from all members and I'm certainly not required to explain myself to you at any time.
Have a nice day.

Used to work for Hyatt...and at one time we managed the MGM Grand in Vegas...don't know whether they do now or not. I was in the "high rollers" private casino and club with some of our staff having lunch when a Saudi Prince came in with his entourage. They had just just checked in taken not only the Presidential Suite, but the entire top floor of the hotel.

During the course of a two hour lunch and meeting, the prince and his "folks" lost over ten million dollars at the black jack tables and the roulette wheels. When they left the hotel manager (in our meeting) said that this guy came in at least once a month and rarely ever left a winner and usually lost between 10 and 20 million per trip.

It's important to remember that this was in 1982-1984, when a million dollars was a lot of money...lol.

Mark, sorry I didn't get it and I said PLEASE.
Your comment was not germaine to me. Germaine = meaning a crashing snob, out of touch and monumentally rude. (Germaine Greer; from the Wikipedia)
I didn't want to offend you, and I don't know why you did?
I did' not say that this tread is my, or acted like that. Quoting you: "it's a public thread open to comments from all members and I'm certainly not required to explain myself to you at any time.
Have a nice day."
So have a nice day and I mean it.

Mea culpa, and hate when that happens, of course I meant 'germane'. And FWIW, I knew Germaine Greer well in London, and although disagreed with much of what she said, whatever wikipedia says, she sure as hell wasn't a crashing snob or particularly rude.
Re this particular subset, what you posted sounded like-was phrased like and read like the reason I replied the way I did.
So once again, guess we have a good object lesson of how nuances of language can be misunderstood.

I was 24 working in Dallas, some members of the Saudi Royal Family (they had more people than the Pope's entourage) and Governor Bush had come to Dallas to do shopping during the Christmas season out of nowhere they came in and we unknowingly canceled on reservation from Jack Nicklaus and Lance Armstrong to serve them.

They criticized the food, the staff, the building.

Albano you are a far better man than myself.
