Hotels or Restaurants? Save to MyRecipes

Postby marlowebro on Tue Jan 16, 2007 12:48 am

I have a question for you all. I currently work for a Whole Foods Market as a hot bar cook, which I supervise. I have been considering moving into the resturant scene or maybe even hotels. I graduated from culinary school and went straight to Whole Foods, so I still feel that I haven't gotten my feet wet. There is alot of room for growth at whole foods, but I am extremely passionate for high end food. I just don't know which road to take. I assume that hotels pay more than resturants but I'm not sure. Anyone has some inside info for me that I should know or consider

Welcome to C2C!
I worked rest only for a few years and made much better money than the hotel I currently work at...but I also went from city to small town so..might not really be representational(sp?)
what ever you wanna do just go for it...if you don't like it try somethin else....boy I wish I had that kind of freedom...

hotels are a really good career choice. i have been in hotels for then years and advanced really fast. i am now an executive chef. hotels have alot of perks, mainly chains, were you can go anywhere in the country or the world. plus in hotels you can use your creative talents for weddings and banquets. send me a message and i will send you my # , then i can fill ya in

i work at a hilton hotel with a high end resturant inside of it. luckly i get the chance to work at the catering side of the hotel, and get to work on the high end side of the resturant. if you could find a place where you could do the both to get it as a part time thing you could find out what you like. get your feet wet and just go for it.

At the right hotel you will get a broad range of foods, styles, services and methods experience. You will also pick up a ton of experience in business and personnel management.

Most restos won't give you the broad picture and exposure of a hotel - but you might get more experience in particular styles.

Have you thought about country clubs? Could be kind of a cross between hotel and resto, experience wise.

Eveyone I've met with a hotel background has the ability to go about anywhere they want after that...

A country club would be an ideal way to start you get the feel of the real kitchen/ rest. experience while being limited by the volume of member use as opposed to a friday night with 300 on the books, and you learn alot of banquet style cooking like hotels do

Loved hotels. Have worked my way through a few countries with Hilton International. Would not change the experience for anything. As exec chef worked in a private club and loved it. There are a few private clubs which are very exclusive and have top notch food, and I think those are worth it.
