$12 Per Hour Save to MyRecipes

Postby atlimar on Sun Jan 21, 2007 10:59 pm

Hi Im new here

I just got a job in the US (Washington Dc) I've been an apprentice for 4 years in a fine dining restaurant in Iceland and I've finished the culinary school there al so. In my job in Washington I will get 12$ to begin with and it will rise if I do a good job. In Iceland 12$ is nothing you can't even go to Mac Donalds for it. Is it normal in the States? or am I being screwed?

Thank you folks

Depends on the cost of living in the area you're in but yeah, $12 per hour is a reasonable rate of pay for a line cook.

Be glad you are not here in Iowa...average is about $7.00 a hour to start...anyone with any skill, training, etc makes about $10.00.

I don't get out of bed for less than $15.00 a hour these days however.

I was lucky to get $8 starting at my last job here. Then again, the cost of living in Kentucky isn't really all that high.

I mean when you say 25 is the minimum wage, is that your currency translated into US Dollars, or is that your currency? I mean minimum wage is all relevant to as you say cost of living. Cost of living in Iowa I am sure isn't the same. Cost of living is expensive here in France, however I pay no medical, everything is about 98 percent free. I laugh every time I go to the pharmacy or the hospital. I love it. I was talking to another guy when I was doing the vendange this last season, and he was knocking the US, how we do not have medical. I told him we have medical for the poor, I pulled some number from my a, like people who make less then 12,000 a year who have a family. This guy was so shocked. 12,000 a year is poor? You think this is poor? The average wage here per month for a Cristo/Cook is about 1200 euros, and less. For a Chef it's higher of course, depending on the operation etc etc.

It appears 1 USD is worth about 69 icelandic Kronurs, so I'm assuming you already performed an exchange calculation... in which case, assuming purchasing power parity calculations have yet to be factored in is still greater than 12 dollars an hour. However, in the US and Canada, 12 dollars an hour will be pretty average for the most part and some parts will either be higher or lower, with 20 dollars being very uncommon.
