I would stay away from military themes. I'm in the Army and wouldn't do it. I get my fill daily and don't need to be reminded of what I do. I sure that the brass would feel the same. A themed show piece I could see though.

Im assuming where you are and thats where my family is based in the Ottawa area its NAVY.. soooooo you dont want to do a "military theme" if they are nayv.. just like you wouldnt do a NAVY theme for a ARMY guy.. just not kosher!

Finchy amaze them with something else to me its like Cooking chinese food for when you have visitors from china

or english fayre when you have brits over

Its the Canadian Forces Support branch of Ottawa, they represent the entire Canadian Military. besides Jen, Military is a general term, it applies to both land forces, navy and the air force.

Well hell, you want military themed food, you got it!
Spitfire shrimp appetizer (rec on google)
Navy bean soup
Grilled swordfish
And they can get bombed on:
Colt 45 malt liquor
Singapore slings
Hurricanes
Gunpowder tea for the teetotalers
Uzi...or is that supposed to be ouzo...oh well

Tank you, tank you!

navy beans! what a great idea!

no it isn't the same as cooking chinese for people from china Jen. i'm not cooking military food for military people, I'm just using themes in the menu design. if I wanted to do as you say I'd just make them Sh&t on a shingle Image Image

an example would be the arugula pea bisque in the MASH form that I did

or a six grain salad but instead call it six branch grain salad to represent the six branches of the Canadian forces support organization.

or "NCR Scallops" seared scallops on a two leveled bed of phyllo pastry and grape and almond saute. It will represent the fact the NCR is built upon a two tiered system.

or I could just put Officer's Mess Menu at the top Image

or I could do something like Vimy's Ridge Scallops. (shrimp and grits) the grits could represent the ridge, the scallops the Canadians that took the ridge when no one else could. I woulnd't put any of this on the menu,. it would just be subtle, they either get it or they don't.

Serve them field rations gussied up to look like haute cuisine (like that Hell's Kitchen episode where Ramsay got all the contestants to eat the "fancy food" made of mundane ingredients)... then pop the surprise on them after the meal.

I should have done more! Save to MyRecipes

Postby Fincher on Thu Feb 01, 2007 3:51 am

Well I took what flattop and jen said and decided to tone down the themes. I did put two things in there that symbolised the Canadian Forces support people and they picked it up quickly. They really appreciated the effort and extra work.

I talked to one of the guys and he thanked me for the meal. I told him I researched them the night before and was going to make a themed menu for them. He said it was great the way it was, but it would have been really cool if I had gone all out. Even Tom was in on it, he had a officers Mess Meriange made up Image

Flattop (Mike) these guys are paper pushers so they don't see the military life like you do. Getting some appreciation and military themes I guess was a nice change for them.. they really ate it up! Now they are getting tipsy at the bar.

I got to shake hands with the big colonel himself, it was great! Image

Thanks Max Image

I have to admit though I lost my cool for a bit tonight, I got behind trying to to do too many things. I got a few walk-ins and they prevented me from finishing my prep for the big party. It all went smooth. except for the part I flipped out Image
