Advice On Working Conditions Save to MyRecipes

Postby KRIS25 on Tue Feb 20, 2007 5:54 pm

Hi I need a bit of advice please, I live here in the Uk and I am having a few problems at work, I have worked at the same hotel for 3 half year and have just started to do the head chef job, he left due to health problems so I moved up from sous chef, shortly after the other chef left because his girl friend was sacked now I am the only chef able to do everything in the kitchen, and my boss will not hire anybody else, so I am working around 60 hours a week doing the job of 3, also he wont increase my wages he said I am paid enough so 60 hours a week doing the job of 3 on 17k, but not only that he just hired a restaurant manager with acne and put him on 25k what can I do, I don’t really want to leave its only 10 min up the road but if it stays like this I think I might have a break down Image
Thanks for your advice

At the end of the day, the issue is not about money. You said you think you're heading for a breakdown, that's the issue. You can't throw money at the stress and expect it to subside. If you're really headed for a breakdown, it's probably time to change something. Two things: Do you get days off? 60 hours a week isn't really that many, and to satisfy my own curiosity, why does it matter that the dining room manager has acne?

3 and half years, and you're worried about the resto manager's acne? Time to move along...

I think his point was that the owner hired a kid, and is paying him more money. I have to second the former advice, it's not about the money or manager, If your already this unhappy, with no change in sight, it's probably time to move on to bigger and better things.

"Why does it matter if the dining room manager has acne"
British sense of humor, implying a "kid" still wet behind the ears is earning 8,000 quid more a year than he is while he's doing all the work by himself.

I Agree with Derek, looks like the owner doesn't give a damn about the grub, so time to move on no matter how convenient it is if you don't want that breakdown.

I would agree that perhaps you may look at moving on. We all understand a passion for food and the love of the kitchen, but it is your lively hood as well. It would be better for you to plan a move in your career, and have a good reference from this employer rather than to have a break down and do something you may regret, such as snapping and walking out on a shift. I agree with what some of the others have said, it is about your sanity, stress level, and mental health. At the end of the day you should like your job and while you may not leave every day sad you are leaving, there shouldn't be a complete sense of dread while getting ready to go in. Best of luck to you!
