Dragon Fruit Save to MyRecipes

Postby Rozella on Sat Jul 07, 2007 3:05 pm

Does anyone know a good way to cook dragon fruits? I don't know, but say like in a jam form or something? Image

I would treat dragon fruit as Kiwi. Excellent in salsas, compotes. With the flavour being so mild, spark it up! If you want to try a jam, how about chipotle?
Curious mind.

many places here make agua fresca from them. but most blend it with another more prominately flavored fruit like ciruela.
some will use them in a fruit sauce for icecream and even make paletas helados (frozen fruit bars) from them.
as far as jam... I hav'nt seen it yet here.

and right now they are coming to market but not in big numbers. they a going for about $5 US per kilo. once the are in full force they will drop down to about $2 US per kilo.

What the heck is ciruela?? I have been a Chefette for over 30 years and do understand most ethnic terms(for cooking and product), but this is one that I have never heard.
Please educate me as this is what the world is all about!
I would really appreciate the knowledge.

ciruela is a fruit. but not any specific fruit. more of a style of fruit.

plums are called ciruela. all types of plums.
Jocote, cimarron, and nance are called ciruela.
some call a nectarine a ciruela.

just about any fruit that has a plastic like smooth skin and a large seed is called ciruela.

it is sorta like the term squash. the name covers alot of different things.

Wow that's so expensive it's crazy. We've actually got a tree in the garden and it's fruiting now so yeah, I guess I am lucky in a way. But you guys get berries and all the other yummies for much cheaper there, which I love but those fruits costs an arm and a leg here. So you win some you lose some I guess Image

Thanks for the link Kitchencapers! Much appreciated.

And oh, Max thanks for the info! I had no idea what you were talking about either Image hehe
