Rollmops Save to MyRecipes

Postby pattie on Fri Aug 10, 2007 1:39 pm

I was reading something the other day and rollmops were mentioned.

I have no idea what this is...could someone explain, please.

Pickled herring rolled up around onions or cucumbers.
I had a Danish friend who ate them for breakfast everyday.

My SIL works out of Copenhagen a lot. They are always on the breakfast buffet.

The flavor is nice, but the texture is a little weird IMO.
Not really like anything else...oh, and the skin is left on so you have this "raw" fish with skin in your mouth... Image

My hubby is Swedish, So grandma makes homemade pickled herring
(personally I find it revolting) and the best Swedish Meatballs ever.

Ah, pickled herring. If done right it is just delicious. We also used to do herrings in a yoghurt sauce (maybe sour cream?) it is a long time since I served them. In SA we used to serve them all the time. FYI, a pickled herring can cure a hangover like nobody's business!

Yes! Herring and onions in sour cream! I like this even more than pickled in a white wine vinegar. You know you're in a good restaurant when you see either one.
It's difficult to find truely good marinated herring in the US. Some brands have way too much salt.

When I was growing up, there was frequently a jar of rollmops in the fridge. Now I know why, lol. I did, however, come to like them very much myself, especially for a late night snack. Image

Pattie, Rolmops with only one L is marinated herring filets wrapped round the half of a gherkin and slices of onion and fastened with small sticks or cloves, packed with mild vinegar acidified brine, also with spices.

Only herrings, caught after the month of June are used as these are too fat to be sold as matjesherring or maties.

A delicacy the morning after.

My wife is half Swedish - jars of pickled herring, or rolmops and a bottle of Aquavit in the fridge at all times. I try not to look while I'm fishing around in there for a beer.

The Herring hangover cure works though, but IMO the cure is worse than the disease. Image
