Having not dated in a very long time... Save to MyRecipes

Postby lebelage on Sat Aug 11, 2007 8:55 pm

..I can't help but wonder
...are women these days really this insipid and neurotic?

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/09/fashio...amp;oref=slogin

Do women really go to restaurants wondering what people will think of them because of their menu choices?

I don't want to believe it- although it would explain a lot.

My daughter has been known to order light or eat before going out with a new guy, but quickly dispells the idea of being insipid when buying for herself. She mostly does it not to throw the guy off for being casual about money. College kids on a budget can't afford a gal that'll eat a big ol' steak dinner without thought of the guy's shallow pockets.

As for feeling the need to appear "ladylike", bull hocky...LOL! I would hope she wouldn't want a guy who would be attracted to that type of shallowness!

A dear friend when courting told her guy that she would get her round in as she thought it only fair, he being the nice guy that he is insisted that he would pay, she told him he could not afford her, but he persevered, the evening went well and they adjourned to his place where she worked her way through his drinks cabinet and finally went home when he passed out, this guy is no wuss !!, sports, military service(hush hush) very outdoor and tough, but through their many years of happy married life he knows better than to try to keep up on the drink.

I know too many people of both genders who give way WAY too much thought to everything they do. Sad. As Bear notes above, one the pleasures of a truly great relationship is being able to just be you - whoever you are...

LOL, well it is the NY Times and this may play in chichi sections of NY, but in general have to believe this is utter BS.
Sorry, no sign of it here in L.A. the land of fantasy and broken dreams and if this was a legit 'fad', there would have been press on it here, accompanied by all the requisite hand-wringing from both sides, and...not a whimper.

Shel, you must not have read the article very well. I believe Paris Hilton (the person, not the hotel) and her cohorts are on your coast????

I didn't know "ridiculous" had a specific location! Image

It's been a while since I've dated.
As I recall, I ordered what I wanted, though made sure it wasn't the priciest thing on the menu, trying to be kind to my date's wallet.

But I've never been a hand wringer.

Well June, LOL, When did Paris Hilton and her "cohorts" become the arbiters of fashion among anybody with at least a 80+ IQ! And interesting that you should specifically mention PH, as there was a recent sighting of her stuffing her designer gob with Kobe beef at the new trendy Puck resto, Cut, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
Paris and pals FYI, are a joke here, and a bad one, right up there with Britney in the categories of how much can you guzzle and how many of your body parts can you expose for the paparazzi.
So will reiterate, apart from the aforementioned, no sign here of the NY Times pronouncements...woe is us, how will we poor Angelenos survive without the "Big Apple" endorsement.

As Tactitus to your Petronius, dear Arbiter of taste I will gently remind you that not everyone knows well of your refusal to suffer fools.

Of course it wouldn't be readily apparent that you speak of of people of a certain quality and, as befits your status, ignore the unwashed.

Rather than chastise my dear Petronius we should all be grateful that one amongst us is setting the proper example: pretending these people don't exist in the same world with him. Because they don't.

Well, my dear Petronius... it would seem these days we see more argumentum ad misericordiam around here.
