Law Mandate for Nutritional Information on Menus Save to MyRecipes

Postby bohica on Mon Aug 20, 2007 12:15 pm

I wanted to weigh in on the controversy requiring nutritional information on menus in restaurants.

Seems as though there are as many restaurants willing to comply as those unwilling. The costs, and logistics of such a plan are being fought in every state legislature in the country. As it stands right now, only a few states are complying and have, in place, legislation to this end.

My thoughts are that, until our law makers stop cow towing to the special interest lobbyists, who, for whatever agenda they have, are creating these unreasonable rules about informing people what they are eating when eating out.

It is as if we, (a collective we that is ) are so uninformed about what we eat that the government has to step in to inform us about the perils of eating in restaurants. The information is supposed to make us more informed about what we eat.

Yet, as with everything else, tobacco and alcohol are still widely used, and labeled with statements that tell us how bad the stuff is for us, but these items are still legal, still destroy lives, kill people, and nothing is done about it other than a label. Remember trans fats and the French fryer grease dilemma?

Cities across the nation are creating these ill conceived laws to protect us? HELLO.......

Speaking for myself only, I would think that it is up to me to be informed and knowledgeable about what goes into my body. I do not want, nor do I need to have my city, state, and country impose rules on businesses that are so outlandish and ridiculous, just because it (city, state, country) thinks I am not able to make an informed decision on my own.

This is just another example of American laziness and irresponsibility. I would think that people do not need interference from the government in order to make their own choices. Information is free and easily accessible.

This topic makes me as angry as the Chicago aldermen who succumbed to the PETA people with regard to Foi Gras and enacted a law prohibiting its' sale.

I hadn't heard about this, thanks Ross.
So would this do away with daily specials? How would a restaurant be able to gather nutritional info on a daily/changing basis?

And who's going to check?
I can say that my burger is fat free.
Or that my flourless chocolate cake is low in sugar and cholesterol.
Who is going to see that and challenge it?
The nutrition police?

Not necessarily, depending on the way the law is written, you may have to "prove" your statements are correct rather than someone else proving you are wrong.

Next, you'll see "legal disclaimers" like: WARNING: This establishment may use food products or food preparation processes that may cause allergic reactions, increase possibilities for unwanted weight gain, or may result in other adverse effects. Management does not accept liability for any adverse effects from consuming any food or beverages.

Don't forget to ad "may contain dead plant or animal parts and grain embryos."

LOL look on the bright side, a whole new echelon of jobs is about to be created, wordsmiths who for a fee will provide restos nutritional and chemical info phrased in appropriate legalese and political correctness, specifically for the client menu with updates for daily specials...now that's enterprise!

Yup, and it works pretty well, as long as you enter the right ingredients in the right amount Image

I saw Chef Pierre's disclaimer and thought I'd post the disclaimer that's on my menu. I own a grocery store (a little 2 aisle number with a lot of miles on her) with a deli. We do...well, we do what we want.
This is what's on the back of the deli menu.
