Postby makeulaugh23 on Tue Aug 21, 2007 3:18 am

im not sure if i saw a post on this but didnt see one. i was making an indian dish for work and it called for mustard oil so i made some and my boss thought it was a good idea to buy some and he tried it and then read the label and freaked out cause it said for external use only. and i was just wondering if it was ok to cook with it or just not use it?

Use of mustard oil for cooking is controversial as the U.S. Canada and Western Europe consider it unsafe for human consumption. Indian and other countries, on the other hand, use it all the time for cooking, and the mustard oil for sale in the U.S. that comes from India, is labeled "for external use only", to get around the restrictions.
Apparently it all has to do with "erucic" acid, and the reason I know that is that I looked it up!
Check out the following link for a better explanation.
FYI, I've used mustard oil for cooking and still here I think.

Here in Canada, also. I was a bit leary about using it.

Was doing some recipes for a lady a couple of years ago and one of them called for mustard oil. Finally found it in a nearby Indian Grocery, read the info on the label and talked to the guy behind the counter. He assured me that the mustard oil he sells is what is used by all of his Indian customers. A couple of customers were in the store and I talked to them as well, they all assured me it was what they cooked with all the time.

Worked fine, recipe was great. Still got the leftovers, never used it again.

Let's hope it wasn't made in China and doesn't contain something weird. And don't tell you insurance carrier that you are using ingredients labeled "for external use only." Those guys get so nervous over this sort of thing.

I use it in Frim Fram Sauce. It just takes a "dot" of it... Mustard oil is very potent! Image
