The death of "romantic" dining Save to MyRecipes

Postby lebelage on Sun Aug 26, 2007 8:40 pm

Well, anyone have anything to say about this?

Seems like all the higher end places now are trying to be hip, trendy, loud.

Seems like "romantic" has become old, stodgy, outdated.

Why?
Would seem to me that romance IS for the young.
So why this trend? The death of quiet candel light paired with contemporary fresh food... why?

Well, our place is not loud, hip, nor trendy.

Simply white linen, low background music from the forties, fifties, and some sixties.

We'll eveny do "candles" on request (after the fire marshal goes off duty Image).

'cause she's got a big ugly A by her name instead? Image Image

Just my personal view, but the MTV generation doesn't even know what quiet, calm, serene, romantic is. Gotta have 3/10's of a second cut-away edits and 3 bars of sampling and hippity hop hop going AT ALL TIMES. Saw a cute couple walking in the park the other day, each with a seperate cell-phone conversatoin going on while they held hands. Ahhhh, true romance... Image

LOL "romance" has certainly taken a different route since MTV!
Now let's take Portland J....no you take Portland, have never been but from your description, haven't missed much.
I know for a fact that the 'big' cities still have romantic restos. True, not as many but they still exist in the middle of the 20-something preferred ultra-noisy hard surface restos with minimal service and indifferent grub.
If you opened a romantic resto in Portland, guess you'd find out quickly how many are left up there with 'romance' in their hearts!

Isn't romance when you share an iPod?

You know, the steak thread and this one just reminded me of the last time I had chateaubriand with my sweetie. Couple of bottles of wine... Hmmm, that was 1980 something...LOL

Why no Ambassadors? Who's the new admin? Sorry but I've been away for a few months. Did I miss something?

Bob and I went to lunch last Sunday (not yesterday) to a little place my daughter and I found. It's in a shopping center - which does not portend the finest cuisine but whooooo doggie - it was quiet, serene, soft music going in the background (switching between Japanese and classical), oh - the food was sublime! Sashimi to die for, tempura, all manner of sushi, and lots of Japanese specialties. We stuffed ourselves, had a nice conversation, and were thrilled to linger over a tranquil lunch together. All of that, and right next door to a grocery store! LOL

Oh, did I mention no screaming brats!!! Image

Lets see, we left the restaurant - kind of euphoric from the amazing food, lack of screaming kids, the soft music, and a large draft Sapporo (sp?) each. Headed for the spa supply place to get a new filter for the hot tub - came home and worked around the house. . . uh, we did have a nice clean sparkling spa that night - and we sat on the couch and cuddled . . . . . with the dogs. Does that qualify as romance???
